Ethics : Doctoral Oath Writing Workshop

Date : March 18th 2025

Teacher : Matteo Barsuglia, CNRS, APC

Since December 2022, all doctoral students have been required to take an oath on ethics and scientific integrity when defending their thesis. This workshop is a training course in ethics and integrity that proposes to rewrite personalized oaths that could be pronounced in addition to the official oath. To this end, we will mobilize documentary resources on the commitment of researchers and their responsibilities, read different versions of oaths and debate socio-environmental ethics as proposed by recent opinions of the CNRS ethics committee. In this broadly participatory workshop, we’ll raise questions as: why and for whom are we doing research? Are we responsible for how our research is used? Is all knowledge good to produce? What gives confidence in research? We’ll be doing exercises to clarify epistemic and non-epistemic values, and taking detours through potential literature and rhetoric to construct texts that are both personal and universal, and ways of pronouncing them.

This training corresponds to an ethics training and will validate 1 point upon completion.
